Renaming never starts on its own. Add your files, pick the media type tab, then press Preview. The app builds a plan and shows you every old and new name. Nothing on disk changes until you press Rename.
macOS only gives the app the exact folder you select. In the picker, go up one level, select the target folder itself rather than looking inside it, then click Grant Access. If you hand the app individual files instead of a folder, it can work with those files but cannot see anything else in the folder.
Yes, for the last saved rename session. Press Undo. The undo log is written after a batch finishes, so it is not crash recovery. A force quit, power loss or a dropped network connection during a batch can leave temporary filenames that need fixing by hand. Keep a backup before a large batch.
That is collision protection, not a bug. Two files in the batch resolved to the same final name, so the second one was given a suffix instead of overwriting the first. The app never overwrites a file.
Online lookups match on the text in the filename, and scene releases are often ambiguous. Fix it in the Preview table: the new name is editable, so correct it before pressing Rename. If a whole batch is matching badly, try a different provider in Settings, or turn on Local-Only Mode to use only what is inside the files.
No. The app works without one. TVmaze, OpenLibrary, MusicBrainz and RAWG need nothing. TMDb, OMDb and IGDB use your own free key if you add one in Settings. Cloud photo descriptions use your own OpenAI, Gemini or Anthropic key. There is no account and nothing to subscribe to.
Yes. Mount the share in Finder and point the app at it. Preview first, and keep the share mounted until the batch finishes. Network renames are slower and a dropped connection mid-batch is the one case that can leave temporary filenames behind.
In version 1.3.2 and later, yes, if you turn on Carry subtitle files with renamed media in Settings under Exclusions. A renamed video takes its matching subtitle files with it and keeps language and forced tags, so Plex and Jellyfin still pair them. Artwork and .nfo sidecars are deliberately left alone, because media centres look those up by exact name and renaming them breaks the library.
In version 1.3.2 and later, select files in Finder, right click, and choose Rename with Media Renamer Pro. The app opens with those files already loaded. If you do not see the item, open the app once first, then look under the Services submenu.
Renaming happens on your device. Apple Vision is the default photo engine and runs on-device. Face Library profiles are stored on your device and never uploaded. Optional cloud photo descriptions send the photo, never face crops, to the provider whose key you configured. Turn on Local-Only Mode to block all network requests. Keep a backup. Preview the whole plan first. Undo history is written after a batch finishes, so it covers a completed rename, not a crash. If you are renaming across a network share, keep the share mounted and the Mac awake until it is done.
